Riara Estate's farm has been around since the 1920s, originally started by settlers in the area. It was bought by the community-based group KIST in 1972. The 74-hectare farm contains almost 80,000 coffee trees, mainly SL 28, SL 34, and Ruiru 11 varieties. Its location typically sees high rainfall and does not have to irrigate. The farm lies in an area with red volcanic soil and is also home to many indigenous plants and animals.
Riara Estate is run by an 8-member committee and staffed by the people of neighboring villages. Coffee undergoes wet processing and is dried on raised tables. The farm carefully works to conserve water and responsibly manages wastewater through designated pits.
